Welcome back to YOU Can beatbox. I hope you guys have practiced the basic sounds because today we're learning one of my favorite sounds: Lip oscillations. Just a quick note before we begin, but you guys may have had some questions about some of the letter's i put up when doing beats [motion]. This is called standard beatbox notation and is basically the musical notes behind beatboxing. I put a link in the description and an annotation here [point] to an article that should clarify it but definitely leave a comment below if you have any questions or suggestions.
Now, back to lip oscillations. Sounds like fancy terminology but its actually pretty simple. When push comes to shove what this actually means is just buzzing your lips. [Demo] Its the same technique used by musicians who play trumpet and didgeridoo where you push air out of your mouth with your lips tightened to get the sound you want. [Demo with didgeridoo w/ pull away to show technique]
To actually make this sound, you want to close your mouth and then force air out while still keeping your lips together. It can be a little challenging at first because you dont want your mouth just flapping around. What you want to do is try and tighten the side of your lips to get them under control. Its difficult but you should be able to get the hang of it within a few days. One good way to practice this is to get a roll of wrapping paper or a long tube of something and practice like its a didgeridoo by buzzing your lips. The rim of the tube actually does the work of tightening your lips for you and this will get you used to the positioning and feeling of how it should be.
So now we'll learn some simple beats that use lip oscillations.
1) Bbbb K t t B K t x2
2) Bbbb K bts B B K bts x2
This is one of my favorite sounds because it's sounds pretty inhuman. I'll post an annonation here [motion] with an example and check the links below for some other good videos and stayed tuned for the end of the video, where i'll throw down a beat that shows this sound in action.
Another great thing about lip oscillations is that you can also go ahead and manipulate this sound to get some pretty unique uses of it. For instance, you can go ahead and but a shh sound behind it (using your tongue) to get a cool effect on it.[Demo] You can also push out with your lungs to change the sound of it as well. [Demo]
I know this can seem like a tough sound but ever since i started beatboxing, this has been one of my favorite sounds to use and has wowed people during performances. So if you tough out during the trial and error stage, this sound can work wonders.
That's all for todays episode of YOU Can Beatbox. Be sure to comment down below with any questions or future tutorial suggestions you have and dont forget to subscribe and like this video for more beatbox tutorial action.
