The alpaca (Lama pacos) is a type of South American camelid mammal that shares similarities with and is frequently mistaken for the llama. However, alpacas are generally smaller than llamas. Despite their differences, these two animals are closely related and can successfully mate. Both species are thought to have been domesticated from their wild counterparts, the vicuña and guanaco. There are two alpaca breeds: the Suri alpaca and the Huacaya alpaca.
Alpacas are typically found in herds grazing on the flat heights of the Andes in Southern Peru, Western Bolivia, Ecuador, and Northern Chile, at elevations ranging from 3,500 to 5,000 meters (11,000 to 16,000 feet) above sea level. Unlike llamas, alpacas are noticeably smaller and were not bred for labor but rather for their fiber. Alpaca fiber is utilized in the creation of knitted and woven items, similar to sheep's wool. These items encompass blankets, sweaters, hats, gloves, scarves, a wide array of textiles, and ponchos in South America. Additionally, alpaca fiber is used for sweaters, socks, coats, and bedding in other parts of the world. The fiber is available in more than 52 natural colors as classified in Peru, 12 as classified in Australia, and 16 as classified in the United States.
