The October Revolution of 1917 - The Bolsheviks Seized Power
Today we take a look at the Russian October Revolution of 1917, or rather the October Coup of 1917. We examine the development of Russia from the February Revolution of 1917 until the autumn of that year, and how the Bolsheviks, by seizing power, paved the way for the founding of the Soviet Union.
The October Revolution was, in some ways, a continuation of the Russian February Revolution, which in turn had been a response to the Russian Revolution of 1905, which had erupted as a result of numerous grievances in the Russian Empire. Due to the heavy defeats and strains suffered by the Russian Empire in World War I, a revolutionary mood once again spread throughout the country in 1917. The February Revolution ended the Russian Empire, but failed to bring about a lasting republican order for Russia. Instead, it culminated in an escalating power struggle between the Soviets and the Provisional Government, which the Bolsheviks exploited for their own political purposes and staged a coup, which is why it is also referred to as an October Coup.
