History of China (1928-1937) - The Chiang Kai-shek Era
Today we're looking at the history of China between 1928 and 1937—the era of Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek: from the "reunification" of China to the outbreak of the Second Sino-Japanese War. We'll examine how Chiang Kai-shek and the Kuomintang reformed China and the resistance they encountered.
The fall of the Qing Dynasty in 1912 was linked to numerous crises throughout the 19th century. Torn between Western (and later Japanese) imperialism and the civil war triggered by the Taiping Movement, the country descended into chaos by the middle of the century. Since the two Opium Wars, the country had also been increasingly forced to open itself up to the economic interests of other countries. So-called Unequal Treaties emerged, which increasingly called into question China's sovereignty. At the turn of the 20th century, a far-reaching reform program was intended to save the ailing Qing Dynasty and the country's sovereignty. But the reforms came—as it turned out—too late.
