Today we're talking about the history of China in the 1930s. We'll take a look at the increasing conflicts between the Republic of China and the Empire of Japan and how it ultimately led to the Second Sino-Japanese War.
The fall of the Qing Dynasty in 1912 was linked to numerous crises throughout the 19th century. Torn between Western (and later Japanese) imperialism and the civil war triggered by the Taiping Movement, the country descended into chaos by the middle of the century. Since the two Opium Wars, the country had also been increasingly forced to open itself up to the economic interests of other countries. So-called Unequal Treaties emerged, which increasingly called into question China's sovereignty. At the turn of the 20th century, a far-reaching reform program was intended to save the ailing Qing Dynasty and the country's sovereignty. But, as it turned out, the reforms came too late.
