What is a Content Review?
A website content review is a part of your On-Page SEO strategy and is a verification process that identifies the status of all published content on your website. Checking that each piece of content is current, relevant and accurate will allow you to edit, rewrite or delete, therefore keeping your website in top shape for your visitors.
If you know all of your content is well written and relevant – easier for newer sites – then you may not need to do this.
It’s always worth making sure all your published content is good. Well, excellent is better 😁
What do you mean by well written and relevant?
First off, your content should be easy to understand.
The paragraphs and sentences shouldn’t be too long. The use of overcomplicated words should be kept to a minimum.
Pretty Pages
How your content looks can also be an important factor.
It’s not so much an SEO ranking factor but more to do with people finding it interesting enough to read it to the end.
Oh! And that is an SEO factor.
If you’re writing 1000 to 1500 words or more for your post, having it in one big block not only looks boring but could trigger a TL;DR reaction.
We’re certain you’ve come across this, but if you haven’t, here two identical pages compared with and without the formatting.

Which would you rather read? This is just an example of a post with several hundred words. Imagine how dull it would look at 1500 or 3-5000 words. 😢
For formatting, where appropriate, use:
Section Headings (H2, H3 & H4 Tags)
Multiple Images
Bullet Points
Lists
Highlights
Bold & Underline
You’ll be writing each piece of content around a single topic (keyword). This means your content will concise.
The tone you use in your content can affect how a reader receives the information (See Tip 2 below). This could put them in a positive or negative frame of mind depending on how you write.
Content Quality over Quantity Review
Part of your content review will be to assess the overall length of your content. Ideally, you’ll be publishing no less than 300 works per article. This seems to be about the right amount to make sure your content can rank.
Writing 1200-1500 words per article will perform better.
In a State of Marketing Report, I read last year (2020) by SEMRush (many others are available), there were some interesting correlations.
Longer Content = More Unique Pageviews
Shorter Content = Fewer Backlinks (mostly)
Longer Headlines = More Shares
Better Formatted Content = More Shares
Posts with More Images = More Shares
The numbers are fascinating.
Don’t be tempted to pad out content to make it longer than it needs to be. If you write a 750, 1000, 3000 or 5000-word document, it should always be high quality, well written and meaningful.
There are no points for just having a lot of words.
Keyword Density
When performing a content review, take a look at your keyword density. You do not want to have your content stuffed with your primary keyword. While this is unlikely to affect your SEO, it is bad for readability and doesn’t help you in any way. If you find your keyword density is above 2 or 3%, we would recommend a look at our LSI Keywords video.
Tip 1 Icon
Part of making your content’s value cumulative over time is to cover a range of topics and interests. While they will all be themed around your business and the services you provide, having a plan of the subjects, topics and keywords you’re going to write about over the next 3 to 6 months will make other elements of your SEO easier to manage.

Use a writing tool such as Grammarly (others are available) to help with your writing. Get the premium version if you can stretch to it. Paying yearly, it currently works out less than a tenner a month. It will help with many more useful suggestions than the free version alone and help with writing in the right tone.
