A Title Tag is an HTML element on a website page that specifies its title.

The title tag is used is the SERPs as the clickable link to your content. It forms part of the user experience and, therefore, needs to be included for each web page and post on your site.

What are Title Tags?

A Title Tag is an HTML element on a website page that specifies its title.

The title tag is used in the SERPs as the clickable link to your content. It forms part of the user experience and needs to be included for each web page and post on your site.
Short and to the Point

If you make them too long, they get truncated so try to keep them under 55 characters in length.

This should keep your titles making sense 99% of the time. Depending on where and how the SERPs are displayed, it could be more or fewer characters and, of course, Google is always messing around with their layout and displays.

Avoid Duplicates

You don’t want duplicate tags for pages on your site. Think of your title tags as a part of the index for your website. If you have two pages with the same title, it’s confusing for everyone, including the search engines. The title tag should reflect what’s on that page and include the keyword your content is targeting.

If the title tag is missing from any page on your website, add one.
Where are the title tags and how do I add one?
Where to Find the Title Tags

Well, they are fairly easy to do. We’ll go with the usual WP solution first:
WordPress Users

We’ll be using our old friend, the Yoast plugin.

The part of Yoast we are looking at is the same as where we looked at the SEO and Readability traffic lights, this was at the bottom of the Posts and Pages. This time we look further down and click the “Edit Snippet” button.

The “SEO Title” in Yoast makes up the Title Tag for your page using a set of variables that you can change around if you desire. We have left the variables as default – Title | Page | Separator | Site title
Title Tags Location for Yoast in WordPress
Other platforms

It will vary but it will often include ‘Title’ in the layout for your page somewhere. This is going to be used as the Title Tag. We’ll look at this in a bit more detail in the video above.

You can add a title tag to your page directly using HTML. To get the same result as shown in the Yoast Google Preview above, you’d out the title tag in the head section and will look a bit like this:

Check for a Missing Title Tag

For this, we can again use our friendly SEO Tool, Screaming Frog’s SEO Spider.

Once you have run a crawl of your site, just click on the “Page Titles” Tab:
Detect Missing Title Tags with Screaming Frogs SEO Spider

Any page or post that has ‘0’ occurrences will need a Title Tag adding.
Too Many Title Tags

If for any reason you find more than one occurrence of a title tag on any page or post, you’ll need to investigate why that’s happening and get one of them removed.
Checking for Duplicate Title Tags

Google Search Console may have flagged any duplicate Title Tags when you checked the errors and warnings if you read some of our earlier Technical SEO posts.

If you corrected the errors at the time, great, you’re done. If not, now is the time to go and rename the pages with duplicate titles to something more relevant.

As ever, feel free to reach out to us. We’re happy to answer your question should you have any.
