Mutambu Hill is a washed Red Bourbon from Burundi. It's a classic example of coffee from this region - complex, sweet, syrupy in the mouth with a lovely long finish.

You can expect to taste a cherry-cola like character, plenty of sweet stone fruits with a sticky, maple syrup/brown sugar texture and dark chocolate finish.

It's a perfect coffee from full immersion brewing, where you'll accentuate the sweetness and mouthfeel. You'll get all the complexities if you choose to brew the coffee by a filter method and for those who enjoy espresso, you'll be pleasantly surprised by how well balanced it is in the cup - fruity, obviously, but not out of control.

Here are some notes from the importer, Omwani:

This coffee comes to us from our friends at Omwani coffee importers based in York. Omwani works in partnership with the Migoti coffee company. Buying direct from smallholder farmers in the mountainous villages overlooking Lake Tanganyika. The coffee has been collected and treated as a single lot from the farming community of the Masenga region. It has been collected by Mogoti Hill Coffee Co and processed within a 48-hr period of picking.

Burundi is among the smallest coffee-producing countries in East Africa, with a population of 10.5 million that is endowed with ideal conditions for coffee production: elevations of 1500 - 2000 m, Arabica Bourbon coffee trees, abundant rainfall, and approximately 800,000 families who cultivate an average of 150-200 coffee trees per farm.

Arabica coffee now represents virtually 100% of Burundi's national production and the bourbon variety grown at high elevations in Burundi is characteristically "sweet with bright acidity, big body, floral, citrus and spiced with wild notes." Over the past 25 years, coffee production in Burundi has averaged 26,700 tons per year.
