The Orca Analog Interface allows bidirectional 4-20mA current loop and digital triggers to be used to interface with common PLC hardware. The Orca's integrated an on-board kinematics controller can be programmed to perform complex actions with simple triggers, in this example an Allen-Bradley Micro820 is used to demonstrate bi-directional communication and commanding of the Orca Series Linear Motor.

Orca Series Linear motors are inherently force sensing and highly accurate. We have put together a demonstration that allows the user to see how the motor uses the PLC and Orca Analog Interface to sense resistance from objects in its path.

This demo, which will be on display at Automate 2023, shows the accuracy of the Orca series motors' sensors. The demo features two motors which are connected to a tablet running a GUI that we've made with our Iris SDK and Iris Controls. The first motor demonstrates the accuracy of the position sensors. Using the tablet, a user can command a position to the motor which will be read back onto the GUI. This can be compared to the reading of the calipers which are mounted to the motor. The second motor demonstrates the accuracy of the force sensors. A user can place one of a set of calibrated weights on the motor. The GUI will read back the weight that the motor is sensing. This overforce threshold is configurable, allowing for different levels of force.

The video demonstrates two configurations of the overforce threshold. In one configuration, the threshold is high enough that the shaft will squish a stress ball. In the other configuration, the threshold is low enough that it won't crush an egg. This demonstration shows the precision and versatility of the Orca series motors.
