COP27 Words vs Reality
Analysis of recently held COP27 meeting reveals that self interests of the countries will always trump global interest. There was a tentative agreement about "loss and damage" fund by which developing countries will get compensated for the climate change related damage from developed countries. It would be very difficult to administer this fund in practice since there will always be dispute between if the damage was due to weather event or climate event. The second important outcome was the discussion between European countries and african nations about import of natural gas. Ukraine war has created a need for natural gas and African nations have surplus of natural gas which can be shipped. This "dash for gas" arrangement will result in more than 30 years commitment of natural gas export. What was not discussed in the meeting was: "phase down of Coal or fossil fuels", "emission peaking in 2025" or "limiting the earth temperature increase to 1.5C". Slowly the realization is coming to everyone that with all these meetings, fossil fuel consumption continues to increase and there is no way out of fossil fuels for many years to come.
