COP Meetings Futile Exercise
We are holding Conference of Delegates (COP) meetings since 1992. The last one was held in Dubai, UAE in November 2023. As number of delegates attending the conference increases, so does the fossil fuel consumption. There is a strong correlation between fossil fuel consumption and number of delegates. Does it mean we need to have fewer people attending the conference to reduce the fossil fuel consumption? Seriously, COP meetings have become pious pronouncements without any significant impact on fossil fuel consumption. This is because every meeting only considers the costs of fossil fuel but not the benefits. Unless COP meetings seriously consider both the benefits and the costs of fossil fuels, no effective action can emerge from these meetings
