I returned to the Bald Eagle eyrie 8 days later and was surprised with a 3rd eaglet popping its head up just after dawn. That tells me that the youngest can only be a max of 7 days old and since on average eggs are laid 3 to 5 days apart and assuming they all gestate for the same period I can reasonably assume the other eaglets are only 4 and 8 days older. That averages all three at about a week and a half old. What I can tell you is that Dad isn't taking his meals in the nest and Mom seems to be doing more of the nest duty than what I have witnessed at other nests. Twice now only Mom has been in the nest before first light all the way to 11am. Dad seems to be doing his meal deliveries and the pair join around 11 am for some flying. The one time I saw Dad in the nest without a meal to deliver he left again within minutes. I think it is interesting how they have divided the duties. I will try to make a trip soon that covers the afternoon because I want to know if they switch off the latter half of the day. I also was able to capture what I think is the most moving wildlife photo I have ever taken. Let me know what you think in the comments below.
