That time I almost died for a Great Grey Owl photo!
I drove 11 hrs due north to Zax Sim Bog in Minnesota and spent 4 days there. I had my very first encounters with both the Boreal Chickadee and the Great Grey Owl, and got some nice photos and videos and had a general blast! I stayed at Alesches accomodations and had the entire West lodge to myself the whole time as the other renters didn't show up. LOL. Everything was going great, and then on the way home, somewhere in Northern Iowa I hit 50mph winds that kicked up the previous days snow and caused a white out. The winds lasted 24hrs. The state closed the interstates and I was exited by police officers onto a gravel rd to nowhere 2 hrs north of Des Moines and Cedar Rapids. I continued on the gravel rd and wound up stuck in a 3 and a half foot deep snow drift on the gravel rd. I was stranded in my truck in -30 degree weather for 18 hrs. I make light of it and smile a lot in the video but if I hadn't managed to conserve my gas I easily could have been in danger from the cold. Fun times!
