In todays video [Passing the Guard] De La Riva Hooks & X Passing I talk about some tips to deal with one of the most common guards in the game, De La Riva.
I've been a Brown Belt since 2022 and also moved back to Missouri to continue my training. I will be brining Rolling/Sparring Video Breakdowns to the channel on a regular basis so stay tuned for more! I'm always looking to improve and what better way to do that than to post my rolls on the internet for people to watch and dissect. What could go wrong? lol
So before I begin I want to say that I over emphasize some of the techniques shown here to help the white and blue belts in the class understand how to step to clear the De La Riva hook and extending leg. When I am doing this say in competition or in a live roll my back step is not as exaggerated and the movement will be far more quick.
In this class I recently taught I go over ways get into the Headquarters position and "cook" the person before going for a pass. The pass I opted to show here was one of my favorites the X pass because it is an explosive movement and lends itself nicely to my style of game. I also talk about proper posture in the position and how I am using my knees to keep the leg pinned. I also emphasize falling back to a defensive position with the double lapel pull to make sure you're not off balanced before going for your technique. Furthermore I touch on linking the X-Pass with the Leg Drag to keep pressure on my opponent before passing but I also say that you can pass straight into side control if you desire.
