In this roll Back To Cali BJJ Rolls | No-Gi Focus on Counter-Attacking I discussed a theory I was watching by Rafa Mendes on how he likes to counter-attack people who shoot takedowns on him instead of shooting takedowns himself. As someone on the lighter side of the weight spectrum and a huge fan of Rafa I decided to give this method. So instead of focusing on takedowns I focused on baiting my opponent to shoot a takedown and then counter-attacking their shot. As you can see from multiple parts in the video this method of counter-attacking isn't really my game and I missed my timing more often than I hit it.
That being said it gave me a chance to work out of some bad positions, mainly a back take, side control, and a smashed half guard. I utilize escapes that favor my size and take advantage of any and all open space to get out of defense and bad spots to immediately start focusing on the attack.
My Buddy Andy has been featured in many other early videos on the channel has been steadily progressing and is becoming more and more dangerous every time I see him. He hit a mean judo throw on me, taking advantage of me being completely out of position.
I've been a Brown Belt since 2022 and also moved back to Missouri to continue my training. I will be brining Rolling/Sparring Video Breakdowns to the channel on a regular basis so stay tuned for more! I'm always looking to improve and what better way to do that than to post my rolls on the internet for people to watch and dissect. What could go wrong? lol
