PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) is a real disorder that develops when a person has experienced or witnessed a traumatizing, frightening or dangerous event.

Many people think that PTSD is reserved for those who have been in severe, life threatening situations such as witnessing a death or going to war, however, this is in fact not the reality of PTSD.

There are so many ways you can be traumatized, and so many ways someone can get PTSD.

Some of the symptoms of PTSD include:

• Being easily startled or frightened
• Always feeling on guard for danger
• Trouble sleeping
• Flashbacks (including emotional flashbacks)
• Trouble concentrating
• Emotional shifts: Irritability, anxiety, depression, angry outbursts or aggressive behavior
• Self-destructive behavior
• Overwhelming guilt or shame
• Intrusive thoughts or images
• Nightmares
• Physical sensations such as pain, sweating, nausea or trembling

Check out this video for a few examples of how someone might get PTSD and what can be done to bring the brain and the nervous system back into a state of regulation and calm.
