Veterans Day, originally known as Armistice Day, is commemorated every year on November 11 to mark the armistice signed between the allies of World War I and Germany for the cessation of hostilities on the western front of World War I which took effect at eleven in the morning--the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month of 1918.
After World War II Armistice Day became known as Veterans Day in order to honor all veterans of all wars in which American soldiers fought and died in.
This year, Veterans Day signaled a return to normalcy as the holiday has been affected by the global coronavirus pandemic that began early last year. Masks were not required. Social distancing was not enforced. Nobody cared about who was vaccinated against COVID-19.
Today, I felt like an American again. I am hopeful for the future of my country.
