34 year old domestic helper Lorna hails from the Philippines, and cares for the Mah family’s 6 year-old daughter Chloe, who was born with Pompe Disease – a rare genetic condition. This is her story, as told in collaboration with Singapore TV veteran, journalist, and writer Naleeza Ebrahim.
Over the last 4 years, Lorna has formed a very close relationship with Chloe, and constantly strives to provide the best quality of life for her. Every day, she performs complex medical routines required for Chloe’s survival – even saving Chloe’s life with CPR on one occasion. Lorna is always with Chloe, caring for her during intensive hospitalisations, and guiding her through school at the Rainbow Centre. According to the Mahs, “Lorna is a domestic helper, a caregiver, a nurse, a therapist, a teacher, and most importantly, a life partner for our daughter”.
Lorna was recognised by AWWA Caregiver Service for going beyond her role with the Model Caregiving Domestic Helper Award in 2015, which was created to acknowledge the invisible caregiving contributions of Domestic Helpers in Singapore.
