Madam Khatijah, a technician, has faced many challenges since becoming a single parent of two special needs children 13 years ago – her older son has severe autism and requires individualised care, while her younger son was born with intellectual disability. Yet, with the help of her sister Ms Marziya, she has strived to provide quality care for her children without financial support from her incarcerated ex-husband, while also caring for their mother with chronic diabetes.
Together, the sisters are committed to the boys’ educational development at Rainbow Centre, Eden School and MINDS Lee Kong Chian Garden School. This is their story, as told in collaboration with Singapore TV veteran, journalist, and writer Naleeza Ebrahim.
Khatijah & Marziya were recognised by AWWA Caregiver Service for their determination with the Model Caregiving Family Award in 2015, which was created to celebrate families that care for their loved ones together in Singapore.
