Since 2010, cheery 68 year old Madam Rehana has been the main caregiver for her husband, who is now bed-bound due to a complex spinal injury sustained during their pilgrimage to Al-Aqsa, Jerusalem. This is her story, as told in collaboration with Singapore TV veteran, journalist, and writer Naleeza Ebrahim.
As her husband's care needs are intensive, and Madam Rehana has been providing for them expertly, following her husband’s wishes as stated in his Advanced Care Plans. She has never lost respect for her husband, and although his memories are fading, she continues to treat him with the same love, humour and optimism that they enjoyed before the accident. While making her husband’s days as comfortable as possible, Madam Rehana also volunteers for caregiver support programmes at various community hospitals. When asked for his impression of Madam Rehana, her husband responds: “Yes, nice girl, that one”.
Hajjah Rehana was recognised by AWWA Caregiver Service for her unrelenting love with the Model Pioneer Caregiver Award in 2015, which was created to celebrate the caregiving contributions of Singapore's pioneering generation.
