Now that we've learned about some converged applications, let's take a look at how convergence affects management services. Management services are simply applications that help the network manager configure and control the network.

In non-converged networks, there are separate management applications for the voice network and the data network. Converged networks require one group of management protocols and one group of controllers that can manage both the voice and data sides of the network.

Data networks are managed by standard applications operating over the Simple Network Management Protocol, or SNMP. Most voice systems use a proprietary protocol. With convergence and the use of IP as the foundation protocol, voice applications will now use and be managed by SNMP. So now that both data and voice use SNMP, just one management application is needed to configure, manage and monitor all communication systems. That one application will manage data, voice, video, wireless, and whatever comes next - and something will come next.

To put it another way, if convergence gives us a single communication network, how many management applications should we need? You've got it - just one.
