To all future moms and dads, if you’re planning on having a child in near future, then start exercising right away. If you do, it can change your child’s DNA, in a good way, of course. It’s no secret that exercising before or while pregnant is beneficial to your health, but have you wonder how it could affect the health of your baby as well? In today’s video, we’ll take a look at why future moms and dads MUST exercise before pregnancy with scientific evidence.

A. Epigenetics
In terms of epigenetics, number of epigenetic studies on how exercise can cause changes in the DNA are on the rise. It has been reported that exercise promotes alteration of genes and protein expression of our brain, heart, skeletal muscles, tendons, liver and pancreas. Then, epigenetically, if you are a mother-to-be or a father-to-be, will exercise be able to help us to pass on a “healthier” DNA for our children? The answer is YES! A growing number of scientific reports suggest that this might just be the case.
B. Importance of Maternal Exercise
A 2015 study published in Exercise & Sport Sciences Review stated that the majority of studies involving maternal exercise have shown improvements in offspring metabolic, cancer, cardiovascular health and disease risk. The scientist also supported that the health care professionals are to educate pregnant mothers on the benefits of exercise during pregnancy for their offspring and encourage them to incorporate exercise into their prenatal care. Another study in 2021 also reported a similar conclusion as well as that exercise during pregnancy had a positive effect on cognitive functions in offspring. According to a study published in Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise Journal, the scientists concluded that just staying active during pregnancy doesn’t only benefit the mother-to-be, but the babies whose mothers exercise during pregnancy experience various developmental boosts, which may play an important role in babies’ future health and leading to a more physically active lifestyle. And because physical activity level is a modifiable risk factor of childhood obesity, the study concluded that maternal exercise may potentially reduce the risk for the kids.
C. What About Paternal Exercise?
Numerous studies have reported that paternal exercise influences the sperm epigenetic and regulates genes for future generations. A study shows that paternal exercise might be considered as a strategy as trained male exhibited glucose homeostasis, insulin sensitivity, and modulated DNA, indicating that exercise-induced epigenetic changes that occurred during germ cell development contributed to transgenerational transmission. The researchers concluded that paternal exercise could promote metabolic health in the offspring as the benefits can be inherited transgenerationally.
