In this highly innovative project, we will used combined CFD-biokinetics to scale-up a novel MBR concept. This concept, published by Kimura et al., 2008, Water Research 42 (3), 625-632 was scaled-up from 3m³ to 100m³. The BMBR consumes less energy compared to conventional MBRs, yet the scale up is challenging due to the variable volume and related process dynamics and ESPECIALLY, the many design variables one can play with (baffle height, reactor size and dimensions, inlet diameter, inlet placement, max and min water level, bubble sizes, gas flow rates, ...). Who the heck wants to pilot in real life to test all these variables and their combinations...
