Learn how to create photo borders in GIMP using a simple selection and noise spread filter.

1. Create selection then shrink.
Use Select-All (Ctrl+A) to select everything on the current layer.
Shrink the selection by going to Select-Shrink.
I will set the Shrink value by 40 pixels.

2. Activate Quick Mask mode.
Use Select-Toggle Quick Mask (Shift+Q).

3. Apply the Spread filter to the selection.
Use Filter-Noise-Spread.
Tick the Preview checkbox.
Set the distance (Horizontal and vertical) in pixels.

4. Deactivate the Quick Mask mode.
Pres Shift+Q or by clicking the left-bottom button in the image window.

5. Invert selection.
Use Select-Invert.

6. Fill selection with white.
Use Tools-Default colors (press keyboard key D)
to reset the foreground/background color to default.
Fill the selection with white by going to Edit-Fill with BG color.
