If you see the “Volvo On Call service required” in your Volvo car, it may mean that there are problems with two things: the auxiliary 12V battery or the VCM module which is the Vehicle Communication Module.
Both problems are possible to solve on your own but if it has something to do with the VCM, it’s pretty hard to get it. The most common issue with the VCM is the lithium battery being dead or dying, so the module starts working intermittently and then turns off completely.
Anyway, before you invest any money in repairs, you should check if all updates have been installed in your Volvo car. In 2024, there was an update for the VCM software and it seems to be fixing this issue. Even if your car is out of warranty, dealers may consider installing this update for free.
