PRODUCTION CHECKLISTS: Please-Please-Please, for your own sake peruse this small post, the ones preceding it and the next one, on Organization, Pre-Production, Planning, Budgeting & Scheduling...they are important...they are very important...however, they are not glamorous...they are not about how to Get Money, how to Hire a Star, how to Sell a Script, How to Get into Cannes, how to Negotiate Distribution Deals, etc... they are about... simply finishing your film on-time, on-budget, on-schedule, with the least amount of problems to have the most amount of quality.
Organization-Organization-Organization:
July 2 & July 3 Hot Tips were about getting "organized" (1) From Scratch, (2) Legal, (3) Production Office, (4) Paperwork, (5) Cast.... Now let's got to the subjects on "organizing" of (6) Script, (7) Breakdowns, (8) Budget.
(6) SCRIPT
a. Finalize
b. Type properly
c. Duplicate it 5xs
d. Distribute Script to Cast & Crew
e. Send Script to Research company (needed for E&O)
f. Breakdown Script
g. Prepare a Production Board
h. Prepare an on-line schedule
i. Prepare a Shooting Schedule
j. Have script timed.
(7) BREAKDOWNS
a. Production Vehicle List
b. Picture Vehicle List
c. Cast List
d. Prop List
e. Wardrobe List
f. Stunt List
g. Visual Effects List
h. Crew List
i. Prepare your C&C (that's "c" and "h" into 1-sheet of paper)
j. Photocopy your C&C for everyone (Cast & Crew) on your shoot
l. Now, everyone knows how to get in touch with everyone, where to go, what to bring and how to get there.
(8) BUDGET
a. Finalize Budget
b. Prepare Cash Flow
c. Send a&b to Completion Bond Company (if needed)
d. Coordinate Budget with # of Shooting weeks
e. Think 1-week (7-9 shooting days), 2-week (13-Shooting days) or 3-week (18-shooting days)
f. Practice saying "No" (you must stay on-budget)
The above are just for a guideline but please (I beseech you) before you start shooting spend at least 10-15 minutes talking through each of the above points one month before you commence the shoot with your (A) Production Coordinator, your (B) Production Manager and (C) Co-Producer (if one) and (D) Director (if not you)....
