Presbyopia or tired eyesight is a visual condition that develops as a result of the normal aging of our crystalline or natural lens of the eye, whose main mission is to focus at all distances. Its appearance, therefore, is closely linked to age, unlike what happens with patients who suffer from myopia, hyperopia or astigmatism (whose causes are mainly associated with environmental and genetic factors, in addition to their corneal curvature).
The National Medical Director of Clínicas Oftalvist, Dr. Pedro Tañá, explains in this video why presbyopia or tired eyesight occurs.
Why does presbyopia occur?
Dr. Pedro Tañá: presbyopia or tired eyesight is a malfunction of an intraocular lens that we all have, which is the crystalline lens.
The crystalline lens is a living intraocular lens that we all have behind the iris and that in a child has the ability to focus far-near, shaping the focus around 10-15 diopters of diopter power.
At around 40-45 years of age this ability to focus far-near has been produced up to 2, 3, 3 and a half diopters and from the age of 55 this lens does not work and only has one focus. It does not have the ability to shape and change focus at different distances.
