As we learned in the RIP and OSPF lessons, there are different classes of routing protocols. The two common classes are interior gateway protocols and exterior gateway protocols. RIP and OSPF are interior gateway protocols, or IGPs.
Now we'll examine exterior gateway protocols, or EGPs.
This type of routing protocol specializes in routing data between autonomous systems.
Essentially, EGPs are used in very large organizations that want higher degrees of network control. EGPs are also commonly used for communication across the Internet.
Just to make things more confusing, the first EGP was actually a specific protocol called the Exterior Gateway Protocol. This specific protocol is now considered an older protocol. The most common EGP used today is the Border Gateway Protocol.
