Tax Simulation: Understanding Taxes™ provides engaging and accessible personal finance education for teens, covering essential tax topics such as tax basics, how taxes are calculated, the tax preparation and filing process, and more – all in less than an hour.
By learning through doing, students nationwide can help fictional characters navigate relevant tax scenarios, such as working in the gig economy or investing in cryptocurrency, and understand their impact on tax filing using online tax preparation software inspired by TurboTax.
Lesson Overview
1. Filing Your Taxes - Carlos learns how to file his taxes using tax preparation software.
2. Tax Credits for Families - Martin helps his family claim child deductions that they have missed in the past.
3. Taxes for Gig Workers - Chinwe is surprised to learn her gig-economy job is considered self-employment and that she needs to pay taxes.
4. Taxes for Students - Dana learns how to report tuition statements from her school and about claiming student loan interest and educational expenses on her taxes.
5. Taxes for Investments and Cryptocurrency - Ailani learns her responsibilities in reporting earnings from investments and cryptocurrency on her taxes.
