Like with every technique, there are various applications and situations where you might want to give it a shot. Here we are looking at parallel compression. In this example, since we’ve already applied “bounce” compression on the drum bus, we’re going to use “crush” settings in parallel. In theory you could apply additional bounce (slow attack, fast release) when working in parallel but it won’t give you the “fill in the gaps” sort of effect that we are going for in this example. Again, all about context and knowing what it is you are trying to do.
Remember that not every technique is going to work 100% of the time so you need to be willing to objectively listen, and if necessary, forego the effect. There’s always another way if you just take a second to think about it.
