What to see and eat in one day in Sitges, in the province of Barcelona, an ideal tourist destination for lovers of small, uncrowded beaches.
1. Stroll through the old town, dotted with modernist buildings (Mercat Vell) and houses of the "Indians" (Spain's Indians) (Davallada and D'en Bosc streets, Hotel Medium Sitges Park). Highlights include Plaza Cap de la Vila, with its famous Clock Tower (Indians' House); the mermaid sculpture; the Church of San Bartolomé y Santa Tecla (symbol of the town); and the Baluard cannon (next to the church).
2. The Cau Ferrat and Maricel Museums, both located opposite the Palau de Maricel. Admission to the museums is combined. The Palau Maricel is only open on special days with a guided tour.
3. Olivier Italian Ice Cream Shop, at 11 Jesús Street and 43 Parellades Street. Opens at 12 noon.
4. Sant Sebastià Beach and Hermitage, the most popular beach. There are many beaches scattered throughout the town, some larger, others quieter, and even nudist. The busiest are La Ribera and La Fragata.
5. Port d'Aiguadolç, with its charming and picturesque fishing village (Plaça Calafats). A 20-minute walk from the center, with restaurants specializing in rice dishes and seafood. I had a delicious and generous black rice dish at La Taberna del Puerto.
6. If you're curious to see more Indiano houses, look for them along Paseo de la Ribera and Paseo Marítimo... just like being in Beverly Hills!
