Chapter 3: Composition
CHAPTER 3: COMPOSITION is a subset of Shot Vocabulary (Chapter 2). Composition is where we arrange a subject within the frame based on certain guidelines that have been followed by artists for centuries. The same principles apply to filmmaking and photography today. Through study and practice, we discover how the composition of a shot can influence a viewer’s emotional response. The way we organize and apply the elements in every shot can impact the meaning, mood, and emotion of the shot or character it portrays.
