CHAPTER 2: SHOT VOCABULARY builds on our understanding from Chapter One that film is a language. The elements of this language are expressed with terminology such as Shot Size (Close Up, Wide Shot, etc.) and Angles. We discover through applied practice that individual shots are the building blocks of film. Where written language uses words to create a sentence, film language uses deliberate shots to create a scene.
As moviegoers, we all understand this language of film, but as moviemakers, we must learn to ‘speak’ it.
We explore the common shot types and their industry-standard labels and put them into practice. We can then, as directors, communicate our intent with our colleagues.
