Chapter 4: Scene Coverage
In “Scene Coverage” we will study and apply certain techniques on how a director breaks down a scene by visualizing how a written story may eventually be edited into a series of shots.
Coverage is where a film director imagines how a scene may play out visually in a series of shots to elicit a desired audience response. Although this is a creative interpretation, it employs established conventions that often influence the process.
The director’s ‘shot list’ dictates camera placement for each shot, which influences the film’s production plan.
The choice of various shots used to film a scene is usually conducted in a systematic way that allows for maximum flexibility in editing the film.
