CHAPTER ONE: THE MAGIC OF CINEMA
We are all born susceptible to certain illusions that trick us into seeing motion.
Early inventions manipulated light and shadow to play on our emotions - the birth of cinema.
As we complete the Montage and Continuity editing exercises in this chapter, we feel the power of cinema as one image ‘pops’ into another on some unfolding path. Through editing, we have taken our first steps toward mastery of this form.
The birth of cinema changed the way the world sees itself and interprets reality. The reality of a documentary can feel like fiction, and fiction can feel like reality. Documentary films aspire to tell the truth with facts that reveal the circumstances. Fiction films create imaginary events where the truth can be revealed, despite the facts.
As creative film editing developed, the filmmaker became a masterful manipulator of reality. Feelings, more than simple intellect, affected a viewer’s sense of truth, and with that came a sense of responsibility as the storyteller.
With editing, film matured from a simple recording medium that captured action in a single window like a stage play, into a sophisticated, structured language with formal elements.
Various shots can be edited to alter meaning, much in the way our written language arranges and rearranges words and phrases to express an idea or a feeling.
