Why Support in Nursing School is the Most Valuable Asset
For Jason, Utica ABSN Class of 2020, he wanted to find a nursing program that was accelerated, accredited, and offered a BSN degree. But what he discovered in Utica’s ABSN program was the support in nursing school he received was probably most valuable of all.
From faculty to admissions to fellow classmates, it was the support Jason received that has helped him get through the accelerated program while also balancing many huge life events like a wedding and a new baby!
“My favorite part of the ABSN program is the students,” he says “Having people that actually care about you. Being with them in this kind of environment. Everyone helps each other out. It’s like family.”
In fact, the day we spoke to Jason, his faculty and cohort threw him a surprise baby shower to celebrate his future as a father to a little boy.
“We were in lab today and when I walked in it was a surprise baby shower for me,” he says. “I just learned today that they were planning this for a couple weeks. Everyone is very kind.”
His professors have also been a source of support. They answer your questions in a timely manner and they are available to help you through your work. He thinks the smaller class sizes also help this supportive communication exist.
“Because we have smaller class sizes I feel like it’s easier to reach out to professors,” he says. “When I was in college back in New York, some of these classrooms were like auditorium sized classrooms and you get lost in the crowd. These classes you get the full attention.”
His biggest advice about receiving support in nursing school? Don’t do it alone.
“With your classmates, try and help each other. Make study groups. Share the work and then split it up. No one person can do it by themselves. It takes effort from everybody,” says Jason.
