For Hayley, her decision to become a nurse did not go the way she originally anticipated.

Hayley says she knew early on that she wanted to be a nurse, just like her grandmother. She would listen to her grandmother talk about her experiences when the field was quite different. Hayley shares that her grandmother was a positive influence in her life, saying, “my grandmother is an unconditional lover. You could do anything, and she will always love you.”

But like many, Hayley’s path through nursing school looked different from the traditional route. She explains, “I’ve never fully attended a four-year university. I did attend originally for nursing in Vermont, and I failed out of college.” She experienced feelings of loneliness and began to believe that she wasn’t smart enough to get through nursing school.

That is when Hayley found Utica University’s Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing (ABSN) program. “I ended up here and it doesn’t have to be a traditional college experience for you to come to a program such as this one,” she shares. “You’re not alone when you fail.”

Utica University’s ABSN program can be your second chance to follow your dreams and become a nurse. You will have a strong support system of staff and peers on your side.

It is more than possible to find a community even in a non-traditional education path. When Hayley relocated to enroll in the Utica University ABSN program, she left everything she knew, but soon found a close friend, Megan, in the nursing program.

In Hayley’s words, “It's not easy to start a whole new adventure in your life and be alone in a new place where I don't know anyone, and I made a lifelong friend.”
