Author Name: Sabelo Velenkosini Msweli

Abstract: This is an exploratory study. This paper aimed to examine the role of teachers in schools from a South African perspective. The study has employed a qualitative research approach. A data were collected using secondary data based on qualitative content analysis. Research results showed that school teachers play seven main roles as contained in Personnel Administrative Measures (PAM) including the educator as learning mediator, educator as interpreter and designer of learning programmes and materials, educator as leader, administrator and manager, educator as scholar, researcher and lifelong learner, educator in pastoral role, educator as assessor and educator as subject or learning area specialist. The study has recommended that the schools should recruit appropriately qualified staff, such as educational psychologists and social workers, to address learners’ difficulties and challenges that require special attention from well-trained professionals.
