Title- Hydrogel systems based on natural polymers modified with albumin carriers

Abstract- Controlled drug release systems have played a very important role in modern medicine in recent years. In the case of cancer, which is classified as a disease of civilization, cytostatic drugs are used. Cytostatics exhibit toxic effects on cancer cells but also on selected healthy cells. Especially those that are active i.e. rapidly proliferating and dividing. In the case of chemotherapy, the side effects of cytostatics are undesirable and troublesome for patients. In view of this, new methods of introducing cytostatic drugs are constantly being sought, for example, through the use of carriers. An excellent carrier is proteins, which can combine with both hydrophilic and hydrophobic drugs. Such carriers can be combined with polymeric systems to obtain transdermal systems. Such systems may find application in the treatment of skin cancer where transdermal action is of particular importance. The aim of the presented work was to obtain polymeric systems based on natural polymers such as chitosan and gelatin additionally modified with albumin carriers. The hydrogel materials were obtained by photopolymerization and then their physicochemical properties were characterized. Analysis of sorptive capacity was carried out, confirming the ability to absorb wound exudate. Subsequently, spectroscopic analyses confirmed the presence of characteristic groupings for proteins embedded in the structure of the polymer matrix. Incubation studies were also conducted in simulated incubation fluids. The analysis was carried out at 37°C reflecting conditions in the human body. The materials were shown to be sufficiently stable and without degradation over several weeks of incubation. This research was carried out within the SMART-MAT Functional Materials Science Club of the Faculty of Materials Engineering and Physics of Cracow University of Technology.
