Peelable Candy Paint?
Our first Toyota GR86 and we did an amazingly deep, cherry wine, candy red. Shout out to discount.supra on Instagram for trusting us with his baby. We love sharing our work and honestly the shop is open if you are interested in seeing how it is done! Crazy to think that this candy paint job is peelable. All done in Liquid Wrap, the owner can drive around for a couple years with his factory paint protected and then just peel it off when he's ready! Heres how we did it.
First the car gets a bath with water and dish soap 24hrs prior. This cleans the surface of any dirt, grease, and oils so that the peelable paint will adhere properly. We let the car dry over night to get rid of any water hiding in the nooks and crannies.
Next we mask the car up, being sure to mask off key components like the front radiator, brake discs, head lights, tail lights, and windows of course. We also made a clean tape line in the door jambs to prevent any overspray.
This color is actually a little complicated compared to what we normally do. We start with a black base on the car. It is important that we put enough product down to ensure durability and peelability. Using an HVLP gun and 1.7mm tip, we put down 2 gallons of black base.
Next up we mix some gold flake into clear basecoat. You could go with silver here but we chose gold just for some warmth. This layer will reflect through the red candy giving it a nice shine and show off the depth. We bust out the 2.5mm tip to shoot these flakes and go for about 80% coverage on the car.
Now we can start with the red candy. We are using House of Kolor Apple Red mixed into clear basecoat. This is going to be a translucent red color allowing the gold flake to still be visible. We put a couple coats of this down to create some depth then move onto the clear.
We mixed in more candy with the clear coat and put down 2 coats with a 1.3mm tip LVLP. Then we let it dry overnight and sanded it down smooth the next morning. We cleaned up the surface with water and denatured alcohol then applied one last coat of clear gloss without the candy this time. After about 4 hours it was dry and we can unmask.
The paint almost shifts between black in the shadows to a bright blood red in the sun which is exactly what the owner asked for. It came out better than we expected to be honest. Definitely a lot of work but it paid off in the end.
