I can't believe that happened!

What a wild week! Our first ever Audi R8 and a gnarly crash.
Richard came to us with a specific vision for his car and we knew just what to do. Luckily with Liquid Wrap, customizing colors is pretty easy. He was looking for a flat finish army green to protect his factory color that still had the protection and durability of a real paintjob.
After a good wash with dish soap and water, we got to work masking the vehicle. The car was coated in PPF but luckily it was high quality stuff so our peelable paint could go right over it without any problems. Audis tend to be pretty easy to mask. Larger panel gaps, easily removable components, and smooth body lines. We carefully masked off the door jambs to create a clean edge since the owner did not want them painted. After a quick wipe down with some denatured alcohol and water, the car was ready to spray.
First up was the black base coat. The base will always be black, dark grey, or light grey. These neutral colors are used to build up a thick enough layer that the final product is easily peelable when the time comes. For this color specifically, we are using black for a richer deeper tone.
We mixed up a formula called Reed Green for the color layer. This was the closest to what he originally sent us. It is hard to tell on different electronic screens so we always confirm in person with a test sample if possible. The car gets about 4 coats of green making sure to do full passes to avoid any striping or blotching. We let that dry for about an hour before moving on to the clearcoat.
Since the owner wanted a matte finish we are using a Satin Clearcoat. This provides all the protection, gas resistance, and hardness of gloss while keeping that matte look. The car gets 2 coats then we allow it to dry overnight. the next morning we sanded it down with 600-800 grit to smooth out any orange peel as best we can and apply 1 last coat of Satin Clear.
After a couple hours it was ready to unmask. Pretty straight forward project. We didn't run into any issues or delays. The owner preferred we did NOT drive the car so we waited for him to do the photoshoot. We always ask and rightfully so.
His hesitation on other people driving his car became immediately understandable when a local restoration shop decided to tune a vintage mustang on our road. While my media guy was filming the Audi I heard tires screech and a loud crash then saw people running. My first thought was "oh no did someone crash the Audi?". Turns out, someone was testing out their restored mustang, getting the tune right and spun off into a drainage ditch. My media guy happened to be there to catch it all on camera and no one was hurt, at least physically. The emotional damage of seeing that beautiful car in a pile of dirt still lingers sadly.
