Liquid Wrap | Galaxy Themed Porsche

Our 3rd galaxy job ever. This time around on a Porsche 718 Cayman T. Cole asked for a little less blue/purple and a little more red/orange/green in his design so we pulled out a bunch of pearls that we thought would work. Coming all the way from Pennsylvania (to Jacksonville), he definitely gets the furthest traveled award. It still amazes me that people all over the country and even the world watch what we do. This is a nice car, obviously, so we want to take our time and make it perfect. Masking is up first and that took us a good 5 hours. We make sure to use solvent resistant materials (tape, paper, plastic) to prevent any paint from leaking through. Cole decided not to have the jambs done so we made sure to mask them all off for a clean break.
The basecoat is just a simple black. This will act as the darkness of space in our galaxy theme so the plan is to have some black show through in the final design. That being said, we always make sure to put on enough product so that it not only protects the car effectively but peels off properly years later.
Now we get to the fun part, the pearls. The technique that we have found works the best is to throw the pearls directly at the car then blow off the excess with an air hose. The direct throw leaves a high concentration of color in the center and a nice gradual fade out from wherever it hits. This kind of helps create the nebula/galactic look we are going for. Then we grab the air hose and expose more of the black base for some dark spacey looks. We follow this up with a couple splatters of a white paint to act as stars then seal it all in with a dusting of clear basecoat.
Once we are happy with the design, we put down a couple coats of gloss. In this case we already anticipated sanding down and re-clearing the finish so we started with 3 wet coats of gloss to give us plenty of depth. Obviously the pigment and paint splatters are going to leave texture so that is why we sand the clear down for a smoother finish. After it has dried over night we come in with some 600 and 800 grit sandpaper to smooth the surface out.
We weren't quite happy with how busy it was looking and we knew it needed more black. We decided that airbrushing some black "clouds" onto the sanded surface would give it more of the depth that we were looking for. To top it off we just glossed it again with one last coat of clear.
Cole had a surprise in mind not only for his girlfriend Sahara but for us too. He wanted to propose down in Florida after he picked up his car and he wanted us to help plan it. The original plan was to have the car parked in a scenic location along some water and kneel down right in front. After scouting some places we came up blank. There just weren't any good locations right on the waters edge that didn't have soft sandy banks or a busy boat ramp. We decided to sway Cole into proposing on a nearby beach littered with driftwood and overlooking the Atlantic then drive to a nearby photo spot for the car. After sharing pictures of the beach he adamantly agreed that was a good idea.
When the car was done, they started their trip back to FL only to be met with a delayed flight setting them back a few hours. When they finally arrived and picked up the car, Cole had to come up with a plan to explore this random beach without Sahara suspecting anything. We let them know we had a "photo spot" in mind for the car but we will be a little behind meeting them there. Little did they know my Media guy was all set up with cameras, drones, and a cute message in a bottle half way buried for them to find. They emerged on to a beautiful beach and Sahara stumbled across the message in a bottle. She opened it and read "Will you marry me?" only to turn around and find Cole on one knee presenting a ring. Of course she emphatically said yes and a quick photoshoot ensued.
Cole loved the new look on his Porsche. They said their goodbyes and headed back to Pennsylvania. It is always nerve-racking wondering if the owner is going to like the look or not. Luckily it rarely happens that they don't!
