So, the second part of our trip to Toruń. The development of Toruń was associated with the Teutonic Knights, who built their castles here. Over the centuries, Polish and German culture, Catholic and Protestant religions intertwined here. This has influenced the history, culture and beautiful monuments of the city.

Next to the Bridge Gate is the building of the old granary, which has now been turned into a hotel. Later there were barracks. Now there is a hotel with a view of the old town and the Vistula River.
Vistula Boulevards, located between the Old Town complex and the Vistula River, stretches along the medieval city walls. It is a popular promenade in Toruń, where the Torunian Days are held. It received its name in 1977 in honor of the cooperation between the Polish city and Philadelphia. The first scenes of the popular movie "Cruise" by Marek Piwowski were filmed here.
Toruń is a former fortress. The medieval walls contained 12 gates, more than 60 towers and 2 barbican. Local forts are the best proof of Toruń's turbulent past and its significant military significance.
The Teutonic Castle. In the 13th century the Polish lands in the area of today's Toruń were constantly attacked by the Prussians. The Polish prince of that time asked for help from the Teutons. The knights came quickly and even built a castle on the banks of the Vistula. Thus the Toruń Crusader castle was the first castle of the order on the territory of Poland. In the 15th century the townspeople decided that they did not need the care of the Teutonic Order, expelled the crusaders and dismantled the castle. Now the castle rooms, cellars and defense tower are available for viewing. The toilet tower is still intact, right next to the mill, converted into a hotel. Hotel 1231 is located in the ruins of the Teutonic Castle. One of the hotel buildings is in the restored old mill of the 13th century, and the second building of the hotel is located in the 14th century infirmary - the castle hospital for knights returning from the crusades.
Charming atmosphere of this place is created by the stream Struga Toruńska, flowing along the walls of the hotel, and a beautiful garden.
Not far from the castle there is an unusual puppet theater in the form of a dresser.
The fact that Torun was formed from two cities is evidenced by two market squares - the Old Town Square and the New Town Square.
The Church of the Holy Trinity. In the 17th century it was the site of the New Town Hall. After the merger of the Old and New Town in 1454, the New Town Hall lost its significance and in 1667 it was converted into a church.
The main pedestrian street Szyroka justifies its name quite well. It really is the most spacious and crowded. Stores, coffee shops, bars, souvenir shops - it's all here, you don't have to go far. And the music of street musicians give it a certain charm. The sculpture of Toruń gingerbread vendor with a basket full of Toruń gingerbread - katarzynek. Torunian Gingerbread Museum is also closed.
Statues on the facades of buildings give the city a magical and fairy-tale look. In Toruń you can try gingerbread beer. It is brewed in the brewery-restaurant "Jan Olbracht". Jan Olbracht is a Polish king who once came to Toruń and died prematurely right in the Royal Hall of the local Town Hall.
The Valley of Dreams is a charming park located in the center of Toruń. It occupies an area of about 17 hectares. The Valley of Dreams is located on the site of the former 17th century baroque bastion of Old Toruń. Struga Toruńska Creek, flowing in a picturesque area with a small lake on it. It is one of the two mouths of the Struga River, which then flows into the Vistula River. In the central part of the Valley there is a large spherical sundial installed on the occasion of the Year of Copernicus (1973). The 3.5 m diameter sphere is lined with granite and basalt cubes with numbered clocks from 6 to 18. In rainy weather the clocks will unfortunately not be used for checking.
Toruń conquered us, and in one day to see and enjoy all the sights is not possible. We will definitely come back here again! And we recommend you to visit it. We are looking forward to your recommendations for our next trip!
