To read a GPIO pin state, first configure the pin as an input and then read its corresponding Input Data Register (IDR) / FIODIR or use the manufacturer-provided library function for that specific pin.
General Steps for Reading a GPIO Pin State
Enable the GPIO Port Clock: Most microcontrollers require you to enable the clock for the specific GPIO port you are using within the clock control registers (e.g., RCC in STM32).
Set the Pin Direction to Input: Configure the pin's direction control register (e.g., TRISx for PIC, GPIOx_MODER for STM32, FIODIR for LPC1768) to input mode. A logic '1' typically sets a PIC pin as an input, while '00' sets an STM32 pin as an input.
Configure Internal Pull-up/Pull-down Resistors (Optional but Recommended): To prevent the pin from "floating" (having an indeterminate state due to electrical noise), enable internal pull-up or pull-down resistors if available, or add an external one.
Read the Input Data Register (IDR) / FIOPIN or use a Library Function: The state of the physical pin is stored in a specific input register, which you can poll (read continuously in a loop) or use with interrupts.
