Most surrogacies in the US are compensated gestational surrogacies, in which intended parents pay women hitherto unknown to them to gestate and deliver babies grown from their own embryos. But sometimes, hopeful parents can ask a family member or friend to serve as their surrogate in a non-commercial arrangement. Also, although not done much anymore, a traditional surrogacy is an arrangement where a woman conceives and delivers her own child with the intent of relinquishing custody to a third party (although the third-party custody cannot be contracted legally before the baby is born).
