The Light Weight Fighter program led to the development of the General Dynamics YF-16 and Northrop YF-17. In 1974, the program was renamed the Air Combat Fighter (ACF) with the prospect of European sales, and the Air Force committed to purchasing 650 units of the YF-16, which was adopted as the F-16 Fighting Falcon. The U.S. Navy adapted a modified version of the YF-17, resulting in the McDonnell Douglas F/A-18 Hornet.
