Fw 189 Uhu:Why Soviet Forces Named It 'Rama' during WWII
The Fw 189 Uhu, or Eagle Owl is a twin engine, twin boom, three seat tactical reconnaissance and army cooperation aircraft that served the German Luftwaffe during the war.
The Fw 189 first flew in 1938 and entered service in 1940. It was produced until mid 1944, with a total of 864 aircraft of all variants built. The Fw 189 was used extensively on the Eastern Front with great success. It was nicknamed "Rama" by Soviet forces, referring to its distinctive tailboom and stabilizer shapes, giving it a quadrangular appearance.
The Fw 189 was called the Fliegende Auge of the German Army, because of its excellent visibility and performance. It could fly at low altitudes and speeds, evade enemy fighters, and survive heavy damage. It was also capable of carrying bombs, rockets, and cameras for various missions. It was highly regarded by its crews and feared by its enemies.
The Fw 189 was powered by 2 Argus As 410A inverted air cooled piston engines, each delivering 459 hp. It featured 2 bladed Argus variable pitch propellers, reaching a maximum speed of 214 mph at 8,200 ft.
The cruise speed was 197 mph, with a range of 580 miles and a service ceiling of 23,000 ft.
The Fw 189 featured an inventive rear gun setup created by Ikaria-Werke for defensive purposes. This system included a manually rotated conical "turret" with a streamlined, glazed fairing. The circular section forward mount allowed for a single or twin mount machine gun, enhancing the aircraft's defensive capabilitie.
