Lisunov Li-2:Soviet Version of Douglas DC-3
The Lisunov Li-2, also known by its original designation PS-84, was a Soviet-built version of the iconic Douglas DC-3 airliner. The DC-3 was a revolutionary aircraft in the 1930s, making passenger air travel more affordable and practical. The Soviet Union saw the potential of the DC-3 and purchased a license to produce their own version in 1936.
The Li-2 was not an exact copy of the DC-3. Soviet engineers made some modifications to the design to make it more suitable for operating conditions in the USSR. These modifications included using Soviet-built Shvetsov ASh-62 engines instead of the Wright Cyclone engines used in the DC-3, and strengthening the landing gear to handle rougher terrain.
The Li-2 first entered service in 1939 and was used extensively by Aeroflot, the Soviet national airline. It also saw service with the Soviet Air Force during World War II, where it was used as a transport aircraft, light bomber, and medical evacuation aircraft. Production of the Li-2 continued until 1952, with nearly 5,000 aircraft built.
