Turn a photo into a hand sketch drawing in GIMP using 3 simple steps:
invert color, apply value propagate filter, and desaturate.

1. Duplicate layer.
Use Layer- Duplicate Layer (Shift+Ctrl+D).
Change its blend mode from normal to Dodge.
2. Invert color the duplicate layer.
Make sure the duplicate layer is selected.
Use Colors-Invert.
3. Apply Value Propagate Filter.
Use Filters-Distorts-Value Propagate.
In the “Value Propagate” pop-up window, select the “More black (smaller value)” radio button.
Click OK.
4. Repeat step 3 until you're happy with the result.
Try applying the value propagate filter again for two or three times.
Use keyboard shortcut Ctrl + F to repeat the last step.
In this case, the value propagate filter is our last step.
5. Desaturate Both Layer.
Use Colors-Desaturate-Desaturate.
In the dialog box, just leave the default settings and click OK.
Apply the Desaturate command for both layers.
