Opening the 2018 Naumburg Orchestral Concerts season, Ensemble LPR performs the world premiere of Founder and Artistic Director David Handler's "Fanfare and Fugue (for a Fish)". The piece is Handler's ode to Le Poisson Rouge, the venue he opened nearly ten years prior to the day of this performance. Conducted by Ankush Bahl, the piece shares the program with Pulitzer, Grammy and Oscar winning composer John Corigliano, and acclaimed violin soloist Tessa Lark.

The piece opens with a warped and bombastic fanfare, which gives way to a dialogue between a dissonant fugue in the strings and a pulsing tonal chorale in the marimba, harp, winds and brass. The fugue - which after being played fully forward then begins to unravel backwards in the pizzicato (plucked) strings - is eventually swallowed whole by the minimalist, diatonic music while the oboe and muted trumpet eerily recall the fanfare song from the beginning.
